A long sleeve is the fullest of the dress sleeve types. It runs from the shoulder seam down to the wrist and leaves no part of the arm showing. You will see it most often on wedding dresses, evening gowns and cool-weather guest dresses, where it gives the outfit a covered, finished look.

How to spot a long sleeve

On a hanger, check where the sleeve hem lands. A long sleeve reaches the wrist and keeps the same shape along its length, either fitted or gently relaxed. Listings may also call it a “full-length sleeve,” which means the same thing.

Two terms get mixed up with it:

  • Three-quarter sleeve: a three-quarter sleeve stops between the elbow and the wrist, so the wrist shows. A listing that says “bracelet sleeve” means a three-quarter sleeve that ends just short of the wrist, not a long sleeve.
  • Bishop sleeve: a bishop sleeve is a long sleeve too, but it widens toward the lower arm and gathers into a cuff. A plain long sleeve has no puff and no gathered cuff.

Wearing a long sleeve well

Narrow silhouettes suit a long sleeve best because the sleeve carries their straight line down the arm. A sheath or a column gives you one clean, vertical shape from shoulder to hem. A high neck completes full coverage. If you want some skin to balance all that fabric, a V-neck opens up the neckline.

Fabric sets the formality. Lace, illusion and velvet sleeves read formal, crepe drapes cleanly for a polished evening look, and jersey sleeves stay casual. Skip heavy, non-breathable sleeves for an outdoor event in high summer, because covered arms trap heat.

For a winter wedding, try a deep-toned velvet column with long sleeves and a V-neck, block heels for any walk outside, and a wool coat for arrivals and photos outdoors. The sleeves keep you warm inside, and the coat handles the rest.

FAQ

Is a long sleeve formal?

It depends on the fabric. Lace, illusion or velvet long sleeves work from semi-formal all the way up to white tie and black tie. A jersey long sleeve stays casual, whatever the cut of the dress.

Can I wear long sleeves to a summer wedding?

Yes, if the sleeve is sheer or the fabric breathes. An illusion or fine lace sleeve covers the arm without the warmth of velvet. For an outdoor summer ceremony, save heavy, lined sleeves for another event.

Does a long sleeve work for cocktail attire?

It does. A knee-length crepe sheath with long sleeves suits cocktail and festive invitations, and a little sparkle or rich color makes it party-ready. Every other sleeve shape is in the sleeves glossary if you want to compare.
