In lace or a sheer fabric, short sleeves can still look formal.
A short sleeve wraps the shoulder and part of the upper arm, then stops anywhere from just past the shoulder down to the elbow. It is one of the plainest dress sleeve types. You will find it on day dresses, work dresses and some wedding gowns, and it sits beside its neighbors in the full list of sleeves in the glossary.
How to spot a short sleeve
On a hanger, look under the arm. A short sleeve is a complete tube of fabric sewn into the armhole all the way around, so it covers the underarm as well as the shoulder. The hem lies smooth around the arm. Listings may call it a T-shirt sleeve, or an elbow sleeve when it lands right at the elbow.
Two terms get mixed up with it:
- Cap sleeve: a cap sleeve sits only on top of the shoulder and stops before the underarm, so more of the arm shows.
- Puff sleeve: a puff sleeve is gathered at the shoulder and the band into a rounded shape, while a short sleeve lies flat against the arm.
Wearing a short sleeve well
A short sleeve reads practical and relaxed, so it works with shapes that share that ease. A shift or an A-line keeps the dress simple, and a jewel or scoop neckline echoes the sleeveās clean, rounded line. A knee-length hem keeps the proportions right for daytime.
For fabric, try jersey first if you want something that moves and stays comfortable all day. Linen keeps you cool in heat, but expect it to crease. To make the sleeve look dressier, choose lace or a sheer fabric: the arm stays covered and the effect turns formal.
For a courthouse wedding, which calls for semi-formal attire, try a knee-length A-line dress in lace with short sleeves and a jewel neckline. Add low block heels and a small structured bag.
FAQ
Is a short sleeve formal?
In plain cotton or jersey it reads relaxed, which suits dressy casual, smart casual and casual codes. In lace, or in a structured dress with a jacket, it reaches semi-formal and business formal. For a classic black tie evening look, pick another sleeve.
Can I wear a short sleeve to a graduation?
Yes. Graduates wear a gown over their clothes, so the sleeve mostly disappears underneath it. Guests at a long outdoor ceremony can pair a short-sleeved dress with a light layer for shade or a cooler evening.
Is an elbow sleeve the same as a short sleeve?
An elbow sleeve is a short sleeve at its longest, ending right at the elbow. Anything that stops between the shoulder and the elbow still counts as short. Past the elbow, it becomes a different sleeve length.
