What to wear to a black tie wedding

Black tie

A black tie wedding calls for a floor-length gown in satin, crepe or velvet, or a tuxedo with a black bow tie, chosen to last through dinner and dancing.

Updated October 26, 2026

A black tie wedding is a formal evening event, often with a seated dinner and dancing. Long gowns and tuxedos are expected, so comfort over several hours matters: choose a gown you can sit and dance in and shoes you can stand in.

The usual dress code

Black tie

When the invitation names no dress code, read it as black tie. Black tie is a formal evening dress code: a tuxedo with a black bow tie for men, and a floor-length evening gown or a very dressy cocktail dress for women.

Invitations to this event also often name one of these:

Color

Black, navy and jewel tones read formal; metallics add evening shine. White, ivory and champagne stay with the couple.

For men

A tuxedo with a black bow tie; a white dinner jacket is an option at a warm-weather evening wedding.

The right black tie wedding guest dress is a long evening gown: a black crepe column with a satin clutch, or a navy sequin trumpet with small studs. For men, the answer is a tuxedo: a midnight blue dinner jacket, a white pleated shirt, a self-tied black silk bow tie and patent shoes. Choose for a long evening, because you will sit through dinner and dance afterward.

Reading the black tie wedding invitation

If the card names no code but the reception is an evening affair in a ballroom, dress for black tie. That is the usual reading for this kind of wedding. If you are unsure, ask the couple before you buy a gown. The black tie guide covers every piece of the code.

When the card does name a code, it can move you in either direction:

  • Black tie optional steps down a notch. A tuxedo is welcome but a dark suit with a white shirt and a conservative tie is fine. A gown still works, and so does an elegant midi or a dressy cocktail dress in satin, chiffon or lace.
  • White tie steps up. Gowns must reach the floor, so cocktail lengths drop out. Men switch to a black tailcoat, a white vest and a white bow tie.

Black tie is an evening code, and events under it tend to start at 6 p.m. or later. If a daytime card asks for black tie, the celebration probably carries on into the night. If it does not, check with the host before you commit to a full gown.

Dresses for a black tie wedding

The code points to floor or ankle length, in satin, silk, crepe, velvet, sequin, mikado or charmeuse. Under ballroom lighting, jewel tones and metallics carry well, with sapphire and emerald especially strong. These four options cover most bodies, budgets and seasons:

  • A black crepe column gown. A column drops in one straight, vertical line and skims the body. That lets a strong neckline lead. Pick one with a side slit so you can stride and dance.
  • A navy or emerald sequin trumpet. The trumpet follows your curves through the hips and opens from mid-thigh. That leaves more room to walk and dance than a mermaid, whose flare starts lower and restricts long steps.
  • A wine or deep plum velvet A-line for a winter evening. Velvet adds weight and warmth, and an A-line skirt sits easily through a seated dinner. Add a faux fur wrap for arrivals.
  • A sapphire mikado ball gown with a sweetheart or portrait neckline. It is the most formal shape, and it defines the waist. The full skirt takes space, though, so skip it if the tables are packed tight or you face a long car ride in it.

In warmer months, lighter satin, silk and chiffon overlays keep you cooler. Spring calls for deeper shades rather than pale pastels at a formal evening wedding. Fall suits taffeta and jewel tones.

Suits, shoes and layers for a black tie wedding

A business suit and long tie fall short of black tie. The dinner jacket should be black or midnight blue with satin or grosgrain lapels, not a notch-lapel office jacket. Under it goes a white shirt with a turndown collar, a pleated or piqué front and French cuffs, worn with studs and cufflinks. The trousers should match the jacket, with a single satin or grosgrain stripe and no belt loops. A cummerbund or low-cut vest is optional, a white pocket square is a quiet finish, and the socks are black. For fall, a velvet dinner jacket is a classic alternative. At a warm-weather wedding, a white or ivory dinner jacket with black trousers fits the code.

Shoes are black patent or highly polished black oxfords, never brown. Women can choose evening heels or satin or embellished flats. Flats are a sensible pick if you plan to dance for hours. Have a floor-length hem set while you wear the exact shoes for the night, so it grazes the floor instead of dragging.

For the trip in and the walk to photos, bring a wrap or a tailored evening coat. In winter, choose heavier satin, brocade or velvet underneath.

Black tie wedding exceptions

White, ivory, cream and champagne belong to the couple unless they invite guests to wear them. Steer away from the bridal party’s shade too, so photos keep the two groups distinct. Black and bright red depend on the tradition, since each carries particular meanings at some Hindu, Sikh and Chinese weddings. Test your shade in the Wedding Guest Color Checker, and ask the couple or host when in doubt.

Some ceremonies ask for covered shoulders or arms. A gown with illusion sleeves or a Queen Anne neckline covers you without heavy fabric, and a strapless or plunging bodice can go under a wrap until the reception. If the couple asks for something specific, such as a color theme, follow their request over the general code.

FAQ

Can I wear a cocktail dress to a black tie wedding?

Yes, if it is very dressy: think beaded, satin or sequined, with a hem below the knee. Anything above the knee, or a day dress in casual cotton, falls short. Under white tie, only a floor-length gown works.

Is black acceptable for a guest?

At an evening black tie wedding, black reads formal and suits the code. The exception is a tradition where black carries a specific meaning, so check the couple’s customs. Pair it with metallic jewelry if you want more evening shine.

How far ahead should I shop for a gown?

As a rule of thumb, start looking about 12 weeks out and buy by 8 weeks, then book alterations for 6 to 4 weeks before. Shops and seasons vary, so ask about their timing. The Outfit Timeline Planner works the dates back from the wedding.

Can I rent a gown for a black tie wedding?

Renting works well. Reserve your size and a backup roughly 6 to 3 weeks ahead, and ask for delivery a few days early so you can switch if needed. Most rentals cannot be altered, so ask about hemming tape and strap adjustments.
