What to wear
What to wear to a cocktail party
A cocktail party calls for cocktail attire: a knee-length crepe sheath or fit-and-flare with comfortable heels, or a dark suit with a tie or an open collar.
Cocktail parties are short, early evening and on your feet, with a drink in one hand. A dress or separates you can stand and move in, a small bag and comfortable heels serve better than a gown.
The usual dress code
When the invitation names no dress code, read it as cocktail. Cocktail attire is a dressy, party-ready dress code: a dress that ends around the knee or a little below, or polished separates, for women, and a suit and tie for men.
Other codes you may see
Invitations to this event also often name one of these:
Color
Any color works; black and jewel tones are classic, and bold shades suit the mood.
For men
A suit, with or without a tie depending on the crowd; a dark suit and an open collar suits a relaxed party.

What to wear to a cocktail party comes down to cocktail attire. For women, that can be a fuchsia crepe sheath at the knee with gold hoops and nude heels. For men, it can be a navy suit and white shirt, finished with a burgundy silk tie and brown suede loafers. The party is indoors and in the evening, so deeper colors and a little shine work well under the lights.
Reading the cocktail party invitation
If the card names no code, assume cocktail attire, since it is the default for this event. A knee-length dress is the safe pick when the wording is vague. A suit with a tie is never wrong for men, and you can take the tie off once you see the room. The cocktail attire guide lists the full range of hems, fabrics and colors.
Three other codes can appear on a cocktail party invitation, and each one moves the outfit:
- Festive keeps the cocktail level and adds fun: velvet, sequins or brocade in red, emerald, gold or plum. For men, a suit or sport coat with one festive accent. The festive attire guide shows how far to take it.
- Semi-formal sits a step lower. The suit and tie stay, and softer fabrics such as chiffon or georgette in navy or a jewel tone suit the evening.
- Dressy casual relaxes further: a polished dress, or a skirt or dressy trousers with a nice top. Men can wear a blazer with tailored trousers and no tie. The dressy casual guide has the details.
If the wording is unusual, type it into the Dress Code Decoder to see the hem, fabrics and shoes it points to.
Dresses for a cocktail party
You will be turning, chatting and holding a glass, so choose ease over volume. Any of these fits cocktail party attire:
- A crepe sheath at the knee. A sheath draws one long, unbroken line, and crepe keeps it modern and minimal. Sapphire or emerald carries the outfit with little help.
- A black lace fit-and-flare. It defines the waist and swings as you move through the room. A velvet clutch adds texture.
- A satin slip dress at midi length. It shows the shoulders and moves freely. Bias-cut satin creases, so steam it on the day and bring a wrap.
- A sequin two-piece with a midi skirt. The waist is defined, each half can be sized on its own, and strappy sandals finish it.
- A jacquard peplum dress. The flared panel adds shape at the hip line, and a structured fabric keeps that shape crisp.
Bodycon dresses and mini hems also fit the code. Stretch knits make the right size matter more, and long sleeves or a high neck make a short hem look more polished. Let the season choose the palette: burgundy, plum and bronze in fall, and cobalt, magenta or marigold in summer.
Suits, shoes and layers for a cocktail party
A navy or charcoal suit is the base. A dark suit suits an evening indoors, and a linen blend keeps you cool at a summer party that starts in daylight. Save lighter suits for daytime events.
The crowd decides the tie. Pattern and color are welcome, and a bow tie works too. For a darker evening look, wear charcoal over a black dress shirt and keep the tie narrow. At a relaxed party an open collar is fine, but keep the jacket on. A tuxedo looks overdressed here, and a sport coat with jeans looks too casual. Finish with oxfords, derbies or polished loafers and a pocket square.
You will stand for most of the party. Choose heels you have already walked in, dressy block heels, strappy sandals or embellished flats, and leave sneakers at home. A tailored jacket or a wrap covers bare shoulders in a cool room and folds into a small bag.
Cocktail party exceptions
The host’s wording always comes first. For a 1920s theme, a beaded drop-waist dress fits the brief. At a winter party, a longer skirt in velvet is fine. If the evening includes a place of worship, choose a knee-length dress with sleeves instead of a bodycon dress or a mini. Floor-sweeping ball gowns, casual sundresses and plain cotton miss the level at any cocktail party. If you are unsure, ask the host.
FAQ
Can I wear black to a cocktail party?
Yes. Black is a classic choice for cocktail attire, and indoor evening light suits it. Add a metallic accessory or a textured fabric such as lace so it looks dressed for a party.
Do trousers count as cocktail attire?
Polished separates are part of the code. Dressy trousers with a silk or satin top and heels work, as long as the fabrics look as dressy as a cocktail dress.
Does a man need a tie?
The code calls for one, so bring it. If the room turns out relaxed, an open collar under a dark suit is fine.
How early should I buy a dress?
As a rule of thumb, shop for an off-the-rack dress about 8 to 12 weeks ahead and book any alterations 4 to 6 weeks before the party. For a rental, reserve 3 to 6 weeks ahead, add a backup size, and ask for delivery a few days early.
