What to wear
What to wear to a semi-formal wedding
Semi formal wedding attire means a knee to midi dress in chiffon or crepe, or a suit and tie: lighter by day, navy, charcoal and jewel tones after dark.
Semi-formal is one of the most common wedding codes, and the time of day does most of the deciding: lighter colors and fabrics before 6 p.m., darker dresses and suits after. The venue adjusts it further: a ballroom leans dressier than a restaurant or a garden.
The usual dress code
When the invitation names no dress code, read it as semi formal. Semi-formal attire sits between casual and formal: a cocktail dress, an elegant midi or dressy separates for women, and a suit and tie for men.
Other codes you may see
Invitations to this event also often name one of these:
Color
Pastels and florals by day, navy and jewel tones in the evening.
For men
A suit and tie; a lighter suit by day, a darker one in the evening.

Semi formal wedding attire means a dress that ends anywhere from just above the knee to tea length, or a suit and tie. Two outfits that fit the code: a navy chiffon wrap midi with block heels, or a mid-gray suit with a white shirt, a navy knit tie and brown loafers. From there, the hour and the season decide how light or dark you go.
Semi-formal wedding: the short answer, then the details
The usual code here is semi-formal, and our semi-formal attire guide covers it from hem to shoes. At a wedding it lands in the middle of the scale. Knee length, midi, tea length and above the knee all work, in an A-line, wrap, sheath, fit-and-flare, slip or shift shape.
The rule worth getting right is the ceiling. Semi-formal is not formal, so a floor-length ball gown or a tuxedo overshoots the code and can look like a misread invitation. Heavy embellishment goes too far for the same reason, while jeans and casual cotton fall short at the other end.
If the card says cocktail attire instead, you can push further: bold shades, metallics, sequins and velvet all come into play, as the cocktail attire guide explains. If it says dressy casual, step down to jersey, linen or nice separates, and men can swap the suit for a blazer with tailored trousers and skip the tie. With no code on the card at all, a semi-formal outfit is the safe reading for a wedding.
Building an outfit for a semi-formal wedding
- Length. Choose knee to midi, or tea length if you want a little more swing. These lengths look finished in photos and leave you free to walk, sit through dinner and dance.
- Silhouette and fabric. A wrap dress in chiffon or georgette defines the waist, and the tie lets you adjust the fit as the day goes on. Pick a faux wrap for an outdoor ceremony on a windy day so the skirt stays closed. An A-line in floral silk suits a daytime ceremony and moves easily on the dance floor. For evening, a black crepe sheath reads clean and modern.
- Color and season. Spring calls for pastels and light chiffon, summer for breathable fabrics and bright shades. In fall, reach for rust, burgundy or forest green in a heavier crepe; in winter, deep colors and long sleeves.
- Shoes. Block heels, heeled sandals or dressy flats all belong to the code. Block heels make sense if any part of the day is on grass, and flats are worth packing for a long reception.
- A layer. Bring a light jacket or wrap. A cropped jacket over an evening sheath keeps the line neat, and a satin slip dress needs a wrap in a cool room, plus a steam on the day because bias-cut satin creases easily.
- Accessories. Keep jewelry delicate and the bag small. By day, let shoes, a clutch or earrings carry any sparkle instead of an all-over sequin dress.
Men’s outfits for a semi-formal wedding, explained
The tie is what keeps a semi-formal outfit above dressy casual, so wear one; a bow tie works too. A tuxedo crosses into formal territory, and jeans or sneakers drop below the code.
Suit color follows the clock. Navy, gray or a seasonal shade suits the daytime, and darker cloth suits the evening. Three combinations that work:
- Daytime: mid-gray suit, white shirt, navy knit tie, brown loafers.
- Spring: navy suit, light blue shirt and a floral pocket square.
- Evening: charcoal suit, white shirt and a burgundy tie.
Fabric weight follows the season. A linen-blend suit keeps you cooler at a summer daytime wedding, and wool makes sense in winter. Finish with oxfords, derbies or loafers and a dress belt.
Semi-formal wedding etiquette and exceptions
Leave white, ivory, cream and champagne to the couple unless they invite guests to wear them. Steer clear of the bridal party’s color too, so you are not mistaken for one of them in photos. A print is welcome if it sits on a colored ground, since a large print on white or ivory can read bridal.
Black and bright red depend on the wedding: black can feel somber at a daytime ceremony, and both carry particular meanings at some Hindu, Sikh and Chinese weddings. Run your choice through the Wedding Guest Color Checker, and ask the couple or host if you are unsure.
Give yourself time. As a rule of thumb, start shopping for an off-the-rack dress 8 to 12 weeks ahead and book alterations 4 to 6 weeks out. For a rental, reserve 3 to 6 weeks ahead with a backup size. The Outfit Timeline Planner works the dates back from the wedding day.
FAQ
Can I wear a long dress to a semi-formal wedding?
A floor-length ball gown reads as formal and sits outside this code. If you want length, a fluid slip dress at midi gives a long line without overdressing. Tea length is the longest hem the code comfortably allows.
Do men really need a tie at a semi-formal wedding?
Yes. The tie separates a semi-formal suit from the blazer-and-trousers look of dressy casual. You can loosen it later in the evening if the dance floor gets warm.
Can I wear black to a semi-formal wedding?
At an evening wedding, a black crepe sheath with a cropped jacket fits the code well. At a daytime ceremony, a navy or jewel-toned dress feels warmer. Check any tradition the couple follows before you settle on black or red.
Are dressy separates acceptable?
Yes, dressy separates are part of semi-formal attire. A silk top over a crepe midi skirt, with heeled sandals and a light wrap, sits at the right level. Avoid casual cotton or denim pieces, which pull the outfit down.
