Named after paintings by Antoine Watteau, and often made detachable.

A Watteau train is a panel of fabric that begins high on your back, at the shoulders or just below, and drops freely to the floor behind you instead of growing out of the skirt. You will see it on bridal gowns and formal evening dresses. Among wedding dress train types it is the one named for where it starts, not how far it runs.

How to spot a Watteau train

On a hanger, turn the dress around and look at the shoulder seams or the back neckline. If a separate layer is stitched or fastened there and hangs loose over the bodice and skirt, you are looking at a Watteau train. Listings may call it a Watteau back or a cape train. Because it can be any length, the high attachment point is the real clue.

  • A chapel train flows out of the skirt and is measured from the waist, so it starts much lower on the body.
  • A detachable train is defined by being removable, and it can fasten at the waist or the shoulders. A Watteau train is often detachable, but a removable panel clipped at the waist is not a Watteau.

Wearing a Watteau train well

Narrow shapes such as a sheath, a column or a floor-length A-line give the panel a clean, uncluttered backdrop, so its movement from the shoulders reads clearly. For fabric, chiffon floats as you walk, organza holds a crisper outline, and crepe falls in a smooth, matte line.

A Watteau train does not bustle the way a skirt train does, because it hangs from the back instead of the waist. If yours detaches, practice removing it with your helper before the day. Check the venue too: strong wind can catch a shoulder panel outdoors.

For a black tie wedding, try a floor-length crepe column with a sheer chiffon Watteau panel. Add slim drop earrings and shoes you can stand in through dinner and dancing.

FAQ

Is a Watteau train formal?

Yes. It suits black tie, black tie optional and formal attire, and it fits best at evening events such as galas and formal weddings.

Can a wedding guest wear a Watteau train?

It can work for a black tie wedding guest when the panel is light and the color stays clear of white and of the bridal party’s palette. Check the couple’s wishes if a long back panel feels too bridal for their day.

Will the weight bother me over a long event?

It might, since the fabric pulls from your shoulders for hours. A light chiffon panel, or one that detaches before the reception, eases the load. Compare other options in the trains glossary.
