What to wear

What to wear to a beach wedding

Beach formal

A beach wedding usually calls for beach formal: an ankle-length chiffon or georgette dress with wedge sandals, or a tan linen suit with loafers and no tie.

Updated October 26, 2026

Sand, wind and sun change everything: heels sink, heavy fabrics overheat and light skirts fly up. Choose flowing but weighted fabrics, flat or wedge sandals and sun protection, and bring a layer for the breeze after sunset.

The usual dress code

Beach formal

When the invitation names no dress code, read it as beach formal. Beach formal is formal dress adapted to sand, sun and sea air: a long or midi dress in a light fabric for women, and a light suit in linen or cotton, tie optional, for men.

Invitations to this event also often name one of these:

Color

Coral, turquoise, soft blues, sunny yellow and botanical prints suit the seaside; white and ivory still stay with the couple.

For men

A linen or cotton suit in tan, stone or light blue; the tie is often optional, and loafers or leather sandals work on sand.

A beach wedding usually calls for beach formal. For women, that could be a coral chiffon maxi with wedge sandals. For men, a tan linen suit with a white shirt and brown suede loafers fits the code. The right beach wedding guest dress is long or midi, light enough for the sun and heavy enough that the breeze cannot lift it. The occasion is still formal, so the level of dress stays the same and only the fabrics and shoes change for sand and sea air.

Beach wedding: the short answer, then the details

Beach formal sits just below formal dress, adjusted for the setting. The beach formal guide covers the whole code. In short, women wear a floor, ankle, midi or high-low hem in chiffon, georgette, silk, linen, jersey or crepe. Men wear a light suit or tailored separates in a fabric that breathes.

Footwear is the mistake guests make most often. Stilettos sink into sand, so the dress is only half the decision. Flat or wedge sandals, low block heels or embellished flats keep you steady through the ceremony and the photos.

If the card names a different code, adjust the outfit to match it. Semi-formal calls for a knee-length or tea-length dress, and a suit with a tie for men. Dressy casual means a polished dress or dressy trousers with a nice top, and a blazer without a tie. Casual means a clean sundress or skirt, and chinos with a polo or button-down. If the card names no code, start from beach formal.

Building an outfit for a beach wedding

  1. Length. An ankle-length hem gives you a long, formal line and stays clear of the sand. It also works better with flat shoes than a floor-length gown. A high-low hem shows your sandals at the front and keeps a sweep of skirt behind you. If you want floor length, a sweep train is the shortest train and the easiest to manage outdoors.
  2. Fabric. Choose a fabric that flows but has some weight. Chiffon is the lightest and coolest, though it creases and snags more than heavier cloth. Georgette drapes the same way and hides creases better. Matte jersey packs without wrinkling, which helps if you are flying to the wedding. Leave heavy satin, velvet and brocade at home, because they trap heat.
  3. Silhouette. An Empire dress raises the waist to just under the bust and lets the skirt fall loosely, which keeps you comfortable over a long, warm day. A slip dress shows the shoulders and arms in a long, fluid line. A halter keeps you cool and leaves the upper back bare. For some coverage, a flutter sleeve softly covers the top of the arm.
  4. Color. Turquoise and coral look good against the sea. Be careful with very pale shades, because strong sun can make them look white in photos. In fall, terracotta adds warmth. After sunset, a slightly deeper shade works.
  5. Shoes. Wear wedges or flat sandals on sand, embellished flats for a dressier look, or low block heels if you want some height.
  6. Layer and accessories. By day, wear a sun hat and sunglasses and choose light colors that stay cool. For the evening, carry a light wrap, because seaside air cools quickly once the sun goes down.

Men’s outfits for a beach wedding, explained

Fabric decides how comfortable you will be. Linen is the classic choice for a beach formal suit because it stays cool in the heat. Its creases are part of the look, and a linen blend creases less if that bothers you. Cotton and light wool also work. Keep the jacket light (tan, stone, light gray or light blue), because a dark wool suit overheats in full sun.

Wear a crisp white or pale dress shirt with matching or neutral trousers. Two good combinations are a light blue linen jacket with stone trousers, or a light gray cotton suit with a pale blue shirt and no tie. The tie is optional, and if you wear one, choose light silk or linen. Loafers suit firm ground, and leather sandals are fine if the ceremony is on the sand. Skip shorts and flip-flops, which fall below the code. Add a linen pocket square and sunglasses to finish the outfit.

Beach wedding etiquette and exceptions

White, ivory, cream and champagne belong to the couple unless they invite guests to wear them. The same goes for prints. A large print on a white or ivory ground can look bridal in photos, so choose one on a colored background, such as a botanical-print georgette midi. Avoid the bridal party’s color too. Black and bright red depend on the wedding and carry particular meanings at some Hindu, Sikh and Chinese weddings, so test a shade in the Wedding Guest Color Checker before you buy.

Sequins cause problems at the beach. All-over sequins snag, feel heavy in the heat and look like evening wear. By day, put any sparkle on your shoes, bag or jewelry instead. If the ceremony expects covered arms, bring a wrap to wear over a sleeveless dress. If the couple asks for a palette or a dress level of their own, follow their request.

FAQ

Can I wear a maxi dress to a beach wedding?

Yes. A maxi is the natural choice under beach formal. Keep the hem at the ankle rather than on the ground so it stays out of the sand. Choose a fabric with enough drape that a gust will not lift the skirt.

What should I wear to a winter beach wedding?

Destination beach weddings in winter are warm during the day, so light fabrics still make sense. Plan a layer for the evening, such as a wrap or a long sleeve. Warmer tones like terracotta also work in the cooler months.

How early should I buy my outfit?

As a rule of thumb, start shopping for an off-the-rack dress about 12 weeks out and aim to finish by 8. That leaves room for alterations four to six weeks before the wedding. For a rental, reserve about three to six weeks ahead, with a backup size. The Outfit Timeline Planner works out the dates from your wedding day.

Do men need a tie at a beach wedding?

Not under beach formal. An open collar with a light suit is correct. If the card says semi-formal instead, add a tie, ideally in light silk or linen so it suits the setting.
