What to wear
What to wear to a summer wedding
A summer wedding usually calls for semi-formal attire: a breathable chiffon or georgette midi in a bright color, or a light linen-blend suit with a tie.
Heat shapes the outfit: breathable fabrics, lighter colors and shoes you can stand in outdoors. Many summer weddings start outside in the sun and move indoors, so plan for both.
The usual dress code
When the invitation names no dress code, read it as semi formal. Semi-formal attire sits between casual and formal: a cocktail dress, an elegant midi or dressy separates for women, and a suit and tie for men.
Other codes you may see
Invitations to this event also often name one of these:
Color
Brights, pastels and florals all suit summer; save the deepest colors for an evening reception.
For men
A linen-blend or light wool suit in tan, light gray or light blue; a breathable shirt and a lighter tie.

A summer wedding usually calls for semi-formal attire. For women, that can be a coral chiffon midi with block heels. For men, it can be a light gray linen-blend suit with a white shirt and a lighter tie. The best summer wedding guest dresses keep you cool and still look dressed up, so choose the fabric first and the color second.
Summer wedding: the short answer, then the details
If the invitation names no code, start from semi-formal attire. It sits in the middle of the formality scale and covers a knee, tea-length or midi dress, dressy separates, or a suit and tie. Floor-length ball gowns, heavy embellishment, jeans and casual cotton fall outside it.
The rule that is easiest to get wrong in July is dressing down because of the heat. Heat changes the fabric, not the level of dress. A plain cotton sundress still reads too casual, and a linen-blend suit still wears its tie. Keep the same formality and choose a lighter weave.
Other codes on the card shift the outfit from that starting point. Cocktail wording moves you up a step, toward bolder shades, satin and a sleeker cut. Beach formal opens up longer hems in airy fabrics and makes the tie optional. A garden party card asks for florals, pastels and shoes that suit grass. Dressy casual moves you down to a polished dress or a skirt with a good top, and no tie.
Building an outfit for a summer wedding
- Length. Knee, tea length or midi is the surest choice at semi-formal. Save ankle-length hems for a beach formal or garden party card, where they look long and still show your shoes.
- Fabric. Chiffon breathes well and floats as you walk, but it snags on brambles and rough stone. Georgette is just as airy and hides creases better, which helps after a long car ride. Linen is the coolest of the three, but it creases heavily and suits the more relaxed codes better than semi-formal.
- Silhouette and neckline. An empire waist skims the middle and stays comfortable through a long, warm day, as long as the fabric is soft. Sleeveless and halter tops keep you cool. A halter needs an adjustable neck strap. An off-the-shoulder bodice limits how high you can raise your arms, so test a few dance moves in the fitting room first.
- Color. By day, coral, turquoise, sunny yellow, fuchsia and tangerine all hold up in strong light. For an evening reception, cobalt, magenta, emerald, teal and navy feel richer.
- Shoes. Block heels, heeled sandals and dressy flats all fit the code. If any part of the day is on a lawn, choose block heels or flats, because thin heels sink into grass.
- Layer and extras. Bring a light wrap or cropped jacket for a ceremony that expects covered shoulders and for the cooler hours after sunset. Keep jewelry delicate and the bag small, so nothing feels heavy in the heat.
Men’s outfits for a summer wedding, explained
A linen-blend suit is the daytime answer because it breathes like linen but creases less than pure linen. Light wool works when the reception moves into the evening or into a cooler room. By day, tan, light gray and light blue reflect the sun and match the season’s brighter colors. After dark, switch to navy or charcoal.
Keep the tie, because semi-formal still expects one. A knit tie or a lighter silk feels less heavy than a dense winter tie, and a bow tie also works. Wear a white or light blue dress shirt in a breathable weave. Brown loafers or derbies suit a light suit by day. A floral pocket square adds summer color without going casual. Leave the tuxedo and the sneakers at home: one is too formal for this code and the other too casual.
Summer wedding etiquette and exceptions
Leave white, ivory, cream and champagne to the couple unless they invite guests to wear them. That includes big florals printed on a pale ground, which can look bridal in photos, so pick a print on a colored background. Steer clear of the bridal party’s color as well. Sparkle belongs on shoes or a clutch at a daytime ceremony, because all-over sequins read as evening wear.
Black and red need a second look. Whether they suit the day depends on the couple and their tradition, and at Hindu, Sikh and Chinese ceremonies both shades carry meanings of their own. Run your choice through the Wedding Guest Color Checker before you buy. If the ceremony expects covered shoulders, a strapless or spaghetti-strap dress still works under a wrap.
Summer is a busy wedding season, so start early. As a rule of thumb, shop for an off-the-rack dress from about 12 weeks out and finish by about 8, then book alterations 4 to 6 weeks before. The Outfit Timeline Planner works out these dates back from your wedding day.
FAQ
Can I wear a maxi dress to a summer wedding?
At a semi-formal wedding, a knee-to-midi hem is the safer choice. An ankle-length georgette or chiffon dress fits well when the card says beach formal or garden party. It also pairs more easily with flat shoes on uneven ground than a floor-length hem does.
Is a linen dress dressy enough?
For semi-formal, crepe, chiffon, georgette or silk read as more polished. Linen suits garden party, beach formal and dressy casual codes, and it is not a choice for formal evening wear. If you love the feel, a linen blend creases less and looks neater by the reception.
Can men skip the tie in the heat?
Keep it at a semi-formal wedding and choose a lighter one instead. You can drop it when the card says beach formal, where a tie is optional, or dressy casual, where none is expected.
What if the wedding runs from afternoon into evening?
Pick one outfit that works at both times, such as a navy chiffon wrap midi, and add a wrap for later. Men can choose a mid-gray suit that suits daylight and still looks right after dark.
