What to wear
What to wear to homecoming
Homecoming is usually cocktail attire: an above-the-knee dress in a fall jewel tone with heels you can dance in, or a navy suit with a patterned tie.
Homecoming is less formal than prom: short and knee-length dresses are the norm, and the dance often follows a game. Choose a dress you can move in and shoes you can dance in, and check the school's guidelines.
The usual dress code
When the invitation names no dress code, read it as cocktail. Cocktail attire is a dressy, party-ready dress code: a dress that ends around the knee or a little below, or polished separates, for women, and a suit and tie for men.
Other codes you may see
Invitations to this event also often name one of these:
Color
Any color; school colors and fall jewel tones are popular.
For men
A suit or dress trousers with a blazer; a tie is common but not always required.

For homecoming, plan on cocktail attire. That means a knee-length or above-the-knee dress in crepe, satin or velvet for women, and a dark suit with a tie for men. A plum fit-and-flare dress with dressy block heels works, and so does a charcoal suit with a pale blue shirt and a patterned tie. You will spend the night dancing, so choose clothes you can move in for hours.
Homecoming: the short answer, then the details
The homecoming dress code is cocktail unless the school says otherwise. When the ticket or announcement names no code, dress to that level. Women can wear a party dress that ends near the knee or polished separates. Men can wear a suit. The cocktail attire guide covers the full code.
The most common mistake is dressing for prom. A floor-sweeping ball gown or a tuxedo looks overdressed at a dance that sits a step below prom. Save those for the night described in what to wear to prom.
Two other codes sometimes appear. Semi-formal sits a little lower and softer. A cocktail dress, an elegant midi or dressy separates all fit, and men still wear a suit and tie. A themed dance asks you to dress to whatever the organizers named, such as a decade or a color, at the formality the rest of the announcement suggests. The themed attire guide explains how to nod to a theme without turning it into a costume.
Building an outfit for homecoming
- Pick the length first. Above the knee and knee length are the usual homecoming hems because they show your legs and leave you free to dance. A mini works if you will mostly be standing. Skip it if you expect low chairs or a walk up stairs in front of a crowd. A high-low hem shows off your shoes at the front and keeps a sweep of skirt behind you.
- Choose a silhouette for movement. A fit-and-flare dress defines the waist and swings when you move, which suits a dance floor. A two-piece also defines the waist and lets you show a little midriff or none. A bodycon dress follows your curves closely and suits a night spent mostly standing and sitting. Bodycon dresses are cut in stretch knits, so getting the size right matters more than with woven fabrics.
- Match the fabric to a fall evening. Jacquard and velvet accents fit the season, and satin or a little shine fits the evening hour. Leave plain cotton and casual sundresses at home, because they read too casual for the code.
- Choose a color. Any color works. For fall evening, burgundy, forest green, plum, navy, bronze and deep teal all look rich under evening lights. School colors are a good choice too, and black is fine.
- Pick shoes you can dance in. Dressy block heels or embellished flats keep you comfortable through a long night, and strappy sandals work if you are used to them. Sneakers and flip-flops fall below the code.
- Add a layer and a small bag. A tailored jacket or a wrap covers the trip to and from the dance on a fall night. A small clutch holds what you need without getting in the way.
Men’s outfits for homecoming, explained
Because the dance is in the evening, a dark suit fits best. Navy and charcoal are the safest choices, and a seasonal color works if you want something different. Wear a crisp white, pale blue or black dress shirt with matching suit trousers.
A tie is common at homecoming, though not always required. Cocktail attire assumes one, so wearing a tie or bow tie is the safer default, and you can loosen it once the dancing starts. Pattern and color are welcome. A burgundy silk tie with a navy suit and brown suede loafers picks up the fall palette. A charcoal suit with a black shirt and a slim black tie gives a sleeker evening look.
Finish with oxfords, derbies or polished loafers, a dress belt and, if you like, a pocket square. A tuxedo goes too far for this code, and a sport coat with jeans or no jacket at all falls short of it.
Homecoming etiquette and exceptions
If the school publishes dress guidelines, follow them over anything on this page, and check them before you buy. A themed dance can change the colors or the era you dress for, but the rules on fit and comfort still apply.
A few cuts need a second look. A two-piece or a strapless sweetheart bodice can need adjusting through the night, so choose one only if that won’t bother you. A short hem and a close fit look best when you know you will be comfortable sitting and climbing stairs in them.
Plan your timing as well. As a rule of thumb, buy an off-the-rack dress by about 12 weeks before the dance so there is time for alterations. Reserve a rental, plus a backup size, from about 8 weeks out. The Outfit Timeline Planner works back from the date of the dance. On the night, pack a small kit with tape and safety pins.
FAQ
Can I wear a long dress to homecoming?
Midi and tea lengths fit cocktail attire, so a dress below the knee is fine. A full-length ball gown looks more like prom. A high-low hem is a good middle ground if you want some length.
Do I need a tie for homecoming?
A tie isn’t always required, but most cocktail-level outfits include one. If you are unsure, wear it and take it off later in the night. A bow tie counts too.
Is black too serious for a school dance?
No. Black is one of the standard cocktail colors. A black lace fit-and-flare dress with a velvet clutch feels festive rather than somber.
Should I rent a homecoming dress?
Renting works if you plan for it. Ask for delivery a few days early so you have time to switch to the backup size. Most rentals can’t be altered, so ask about hemming tape and strap adjustments before you book.
