A halter neckline is held up by a strap, or a pair of straps, that climbs from the front of the bodice and closes behind your neck. Your shoulders and upper back stay uncovered. You will find it on gowns for prom, beach weddings and summer weddings, and among dress necklines it is the one whose fastening shows from behind.
How to spot a halter neckline
On a hanger, a halter dress hangs from one loop or a set of ties at the top instead of two separate shoulder straps. Check the nape for the fastening, which may be a hook, button, clasp or tie. The armholes angle in toward the neck, so the outer edge of each shoulder is left bare. In a listing, “halterneck” means the same cut.
Two terms get mixed up with it:
- High neck: a high neck also rises toward the throat, but it always covers the chest. A halter is defined by the strap behind the neck, not by how much of the front it covers. A bare-shouldered high neck is sometimes sold as a “halter high neck”, so look at both the front and the back.
- One-shoulder: a one-shoulder neckline crosses the chest diagonally and bares a single shoulder. A halter is symmetrical and leaves both shoulders open.
Wearing a halter neckline well
The straps make a vertical line toward the face. A straight, narrow silhouette like a column or a sheath carries that line down the body, which is why those pairings work. Try jersey first if you want a light fabric that moves with you in heat. Satin gives a smoother, glossier finish for evening codes.
The neck strap holds up the dress, so choose a fastening you can adjust and test it sitting down as well as standing. Plan your underwear before the day, because the cut leaves no place for ordinary bra straps.
Example outfit: for a beach wedding, wear a floor-length jersey column halter in a light color with flat sandals. Wear your hair up or swept back so the neckline shows, and bring a wrap for the breeze after sunset.
FAQ
Is a halter neckline formal?
It can be. The cut itself works across formal attire, black tie optional, cocktail and beach formal codes, and even dressy casual. The fabric and length set the level: a floor-length satin halter reads as evening wear, while a knee-length jersey one is more relaxed.
Can I wear a halter dress as a wedding guest?
Yes, and it is a cool option for a warm day. The usual guest color rules still apply, so skip white and near-white shades and avoid the bridal party’s color.
Does a halter suit any shoulder width?
Any body can wear a halter. The inward-angled straps make the shoulder line look narrower and draw attention toward your face and arms. If you want a different effect, compare the other cuts on the necklines page.
