A structured fabric holds the peplum's shape; a soft one makes it drape like a ruffle.

A peplum dress is a fitted dress with a small flared tier sewn on at the waistline. That tier sits over the hips, and the skirt below it stays close to the body. You’ll find the term on cocktail dresses, mother of the bride outfits and polished day dresses, and in guides to dress silhouettes.

How to spot a peplum dress

On a hanger, look for a seam at the natural waist with a separate piece of fabric flaring out from it. The flare ends somewhere over the hips. Below it, the skirt runs straight or narrow instead of opening out. In a listing photo, the flare shows only at hip level and the hem stays near the legs.

Two dress silhouettes get mixed up with this one:

  • Sheath: a sheath has no waist seam and no flare. It is one narrow line from shoulder to hem.
  • Two-piece: a two-piece is a separate top and skirt, often with a little skin at the waist. A peplum is a single dress with the flare attached.

Wearing a peplum dress well

The flare already adds interest at the waist, so keep the rest of the dress simple. A boat neck or square neckline gives a clean edge above it. Three-quarter sleeves suit the polished, day-to-evening feel. Knee length and midi keep the narrow skirt in proportion with the flare.

Fabric decides how the peplum behaves. Crepe, jacquard and ponte have enough body to keep the tier crisp. A softer cloth lets it fall loosely, more like a frill. If you want a sharp shape that still moves when you walk, try crepe first.

An example outfit: for a cocktail party, choose a knee-length navy crepe peplum dress with a square neckline. Add a small clutch and heels you can stand in for a couple of hours.

FAQ

Is a peplum dress formal?

That depends on the fabric and length. A midi in jacquard can meet formal attire or business formal. A knee-length crepe version reads as cocktail or semi-formal.

Can I wear a peplum dress to a wedding?

Yes. It works well for a courthouse ceremony and for the mother of the bride. As a guest, skip white, near-white and the bridal party’s color.

Does a peplum dress suit every body?

Any body can wear one. The cut defines the waist and adds shape at the hip line, and the effect is the same whatever your size. If you would rather have a single straight line, compare other options in the silhouettes glossary.
