A high-low dress has a hem that rises at the front and drops toward the back, so one dress gives you two lengths at once. The term comes up most when you shop for the events it suits: prom, homecoming and beach weddings. It is also one of the less obvious entries in any dress length guide, because no single number describes it.

How to spot a high-low dress

On a hanger, look at the hem from the side. The front sits short, the back hangs long, and the sides curve or slope between the two. In a listing, the dress may be called hi-lo, mullet hem or asymmetric hem. Some sellers also use “asymmetric hem” for a diagonal cut that runs from one side to the other, so check a photo of the back before you buy.

Two lengths get mixed up with it:

  • Tea length falls evenly all the way around, somewhere between mid-calf and just above the ankle. A high-low hem changes length from front to back.
  • Floor length reaches the floor on every side. A high-low back may touch the floor, but the front stays short.

Wearing a high-low dress well

The cut works best on a skirt with some flare. An A-line or fit-and-flare silhouette gives the back panel room to swing, so it reads as a deliberate sweep rather than extra fabric. Light, airy fabrics carry the effect. Chiffon floats as you walk, while organza and tulle hold the back in a fuller shape.

Your shoes are on display at the front, so choose them as part of the outfit. The length fits cocktail, semi-formal, beach formal and festive dress codes.

For a beach wedding, try a chiffon A-line high-low dress with a halter neckline and flat or wedge sandals, since heels sink into sand. Bring a light wrap for the breeze after sunset. The beach wedding guide covers sun and wind in more detail.

FAQ

Is a high-low dress formal?

It sits at the dressy end of party wear, from cocktail up to beach formal. It does not meet strict black tie or white tie, where a gown that falls evenly to the floor is expected.

Can I wear a high-low dress to prom?

Yes, prom is one of the events it suits. Pick a version you can dance in for hours, and check your school’s dress guidelines and any theme first.

Where can I compare it with other hem lengths?

The lengths section of the glossary lists every hemline side by side. Use it if you are choosing between a high-low hem and a level one at a similar height.
